5 ways to give an old dress a new look

I spend a lot of time on the blog talking about what new clothes, shoes, accessories, the list goes on, that you should buy. But most of the time, wardrobing consists of deciding what old items of clothing to keep and how you can repurpose them. Over 50% of my outfits every week are made up of items that are over 2 years old.

This little pale blush dress is actually almost a decade old, yep you heard that right. It has long been banished to my closet at my parents house (when I don’t have the heart to get rid of something but I don’t have the space to keep it, it goes to my parents house). This weekend a last minute meeting came up while we were in the burbs and all I had packed for the weekend was ripped cutoff shorts and skimpy tank tops. Because, heatwave.

So I scoured the closets at my parents and found this fun little frock. It is actually quite frumpy to begin with…scroll to the bottom of the post to see what it looked like before the belt was added. But with a quick belt, my current favorite pair of shoes and fun sunnies, I actually loved the way it turned out and would 100% wear it again.

Feeling sick of your clothes, here are 5 ways to give an old dress a new look.

(1) belt it

So many of my dresses have a silhouette I am not crazy about anymore. But a quick belting and it feels like a totally different dress. We all have those dresses that just feel plain old frumpy. A belt can find your waist and give a new fun shape to a blah dress.

(2) knot it

I have so many blah old maxi dresses with no shape. Add a cute knot to the front a voila, cute new look.

(3) put a shirt over it

We all own a chambray or plain button down. If you don’t, head to the Gap and pick one up. Throw it over a blah dress and you’ve got yourself a totally different + casual vibe.

(4) layer it

How cool is this look by Man Repeller! Love how effortless and chic she made a boring dress feel with a few added layers.

(5) add an unexpected jacket

I love mixing looks from different seasons. If you haven’t noticed, one of my all time favorite combos is a summery + girly dress mixed with heavier combat boots. I LOVE how With Love From Kat mixed this summery maxi with a leather jacket!
