how to preserve your curls at night

Lately, finding the time to put on real clothes everyday has been a struggle, let alone doing my hair and makeup. I am a full-time mom, work part time from home, try to find the time to blog & we are in the midst of a HUGE (and time consuming) project I cannot wait to share with you all really soon. But I can only wear my hair in a top knot so many days in a row before I stop feeling like a real human. So when I do find the time to actually do my hair, I have become a pro at preserving my do for as long as humanly possible.

Since life has been on overdrive, I started washing my hair at night. I am all about hair hacks. Anything that can shorten the amount of time I have to spend in front of a mirror getting ready, and I am all for it. I usually dry my roots (seriously takes about 1 minute) and then I let the rest of my hair dry overnight. My hair is really fine, but I have a lot of it. So blowdrying my hair 100% is a serious time commitment. This saves me a good 15-20 minutes and saves my hair from unnecessary heat exposure. I also find my hair gets a little extra volume when it air dries.

On days I am going to curl my hair, I do it before bb wakes up. I use THIS  1.25 barrel curling iron and start with tight curls. I use THIS natural hairspray. I have tried a LOT of different hair sprays trying to find a non aerosol non-toxic alternative. And this one really works + smells amazing. I don’t use exclusively natural products, but with a product that becomes airborne and gets inhaled, I try to go as natural as possible.

Once my hair cools down and the hairspray is 100% dry, I brush out my entire head of curls. Then I spray them again. This gives a more beachy, loose waves look. My curls always look really good the first day (unless it is super humid, hot or raining). But by the second day, they are 100% gone if I do not take some steps to preserve them overnight. So here is the easiest way to preserve your curls!

(1) Start with fresh, day of curls as detailed above.

(2) Before you go to bed, brush out your curls again with a wide tooth comb or plastic hairbrush. THIS is the type of brush I use when I brush out my curls.

(3) Twist your hair into a topknot. Flip your head and gather all of your hair. Twist it into a loose but neat topknot at the very top of your head. If the knot is too tight, it will deform your curls. But it should be tight enough to stay in the topknot all night. Now here is the trick, you need to either use a mini claw clip or a loose scrunchy. A tight hair tie will leave kinks in your hair.

(4) When you wake up, gently remove the clips or scrunchy and shake out your curls. Reapply hairspray!  Voila, second (or even works with third day) curls.
